Skyroot Aerospace, India's first private space rocket company, is set to make history with its upcoming orbital launch. The company's ambitious goal is to revolutionize space travel by offering a 'cab service to space', providing a unique and efficient way for companies to access space. This innovative approach is not just about the technology; it's also about paying homage to India's space pioneers and fostering a culture of creativity and innovation.

The rocket, named Vikram-1, is named after Vikram Sarabhai, a key figure in India's space program. It's a seven-story marvel, capable of carrying payloads of up to 350kg. The launch, scheduled for 11:30 am India time (06:00 GMT), will be a significant milestone for India's private space sector, making it only the third country after the US and China to have a private company capable of orbital launches.

Skyroot's unique selling point is its ability to offer dedicated missions for small payloads, cutting down on long wait times for satellite launches. Instead of sharing space on large rockets with fixed schedules, customers can book a launch tailored to their satellite and its orbit, much like taking a taxi. This 'cab service to space' model is similar to that of Rocket Lab in the US, providing small-lift launch vehicles.

The Aagman test launch mission will carry six payloads, including scientific instruments like a robotic arm for space debris removal and an Earth observation camera. But the real buzz is generated by two symbolic payloads: a lotus made of lab-grown diamonds and a tiny gold rocket with micro-sculptures of India's best-known scientists. These small sculptures, each the size of a grain of rice, pay tribute to Nobel Prize-winning physicist CV Raman, aerospace engineer and former Indian president APJ Abdul Kalam, and Sarabhai.

The diamond lotus, named Cosmic Bloom, is an artist's tribute to space and celebrates India's creativity. It's a reminder of the famous line from the nursery rhyme 'Twinkle, Twinkle' and is expected to become an iconic symbol of India's space achievements. Skyroot's launch is the first of two test flights this year, with commercial launches planned for next year. The company has the capacity to build one rocket every month at its factory in Hyderabad, and it's already making waves in the private space sector.

Skyroot's journey began in 2018 when co-founders Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka quit their jobs at ISRO to build rocket components for satellites. The company's success is a testament to India's growing space sector, which has seen the establishment of over 400 space startups since 2020. Skyroot's launch on Saturday will be a significant moment for India's space program, which has been in the spotlight with its recent Moon, Mars, and solar missions.

The company's 'cab service to space' model has the potential to cater to ISRO's space programs and the global economy. Chandana emphasizes that 70-80% of their market would be the global economy, supporting services that millions rely on daily, from agriculture and fisheries to disaster management, communications, connectivity, navigation, and national security.
